

New York and developed a talent for art while in junior high school. He realized his talent while drawing
cartoon characters on the local sidewalks for other kids in his neighborhood. In high school he entered
several public school art shows highlighting art work by high school student from around the city. He
won a gold medal for some of his art work prior to his graduation in 1938.
After graduating from high school he had a job in a local printing shop. Prior to his service in World War
2 he secured an entry level position with the U.S. Bureau of Immigration.
Like many young men of his generation he enlisted in the army in November 1942. During his initial
processing upon entering the army he scored high on their attitude tests and was selected for the
medical corps to be a medic. Upon completions of his training he was assigned to the Army Air Corp,
391st Bomb Squadron. When his unit deployed overseas he was assigned with his unit to s" Army Air
force based at Matching, England from January 1944 to September 1944.
His unit was assigned to conduct tactical bombing operation of enemy positions leading up to D day. He
assisted in routine medical duties and during surgical operations of flight crews wounded in action. After
the D Day operation he was deployed with his unit to France and Belgium which was assigned to
conduct tactical operations against the retreating Germany armed forces prior to the surrender of
Germany in May 1945.
After returning to the United States in November 1945 he decided to follow his love of art. He attended
Cooper Union in New York City majoring in fine arts. Upon his graduation in 1949 he worked in various
art studios providing art and lettering to the advertising industry. During this time he met and married
Sylvia Sideman who was from his old neighborhood in the Bronx.
After acquiring a general knowledge of the art and advertising industry he opened his own art studio in
1952 and secured contracts with several large clients. However he stated that his proudest moments
during this time was not the birth of his company but the birth of his twin daughters Bonnie and
Madeline in that year. His studio provided box art and packing designs, billboard layouts and magazine
ads for clients.
After a successful career he decided to give back to the New York Public school system and became an
art teacher. At first he was assigned to their Brooklyn headquarters in 1969 over seeing text book art
and publications. In 1972 became a teacher at the High School of Art & Design. A school that enrolled
students with art talent and provided them an academic and vocational education with a slant of
preparing them to pursue a career in the art industry. To become a teacher at this school one had to
have demonstrated a documented art talent and knowledge of the art industry. It was during this time
he had the pleasure of teaching a student who later was to become his son-in-law.
He provided to his students knowledge of the advertising industry and what was needed to operator an
art studio. He conveyed to his students experiences based on his 20 years in the New York City
advertising industry. Most of all he conveyed a love of art as an expression of emotion and beauty.
After retiring from the New York City education system he located to Florida in the late 1989 with his
wife, Sylvia. Upon the death of his wife in 2009 he relocated to Dallas to be near his daughter, Madeline
and his former student.
However, he had not given up painting in retirement. He still keeps activity painting watercolors for
which he has won numerous awards during his career. He specialized in ballet dancers, nautical scenes,
and western scenes. He loves to read books related to history. He still loves football a sport he has
followed for over 80 years. He is an 80 year plus New York Giants fan.
