Judy Harriett Lester Austin

Judy is the daughter of William Harris Lester and Idris Mae Dale Lester. She was born as a third generation Texan in Dallas, Dallas County Texas. She is preceded in death by both parents an older sister Francis Elaine Lester, an older brother Bobbie Glen Shields, and grandson Sheldon Casey Wayne Austin and her husband of 24 years, Robert (Bobby) Wayne Austin. She married Robert on December 23, 1965 in Mesquite, Texas and after his passing she was a widow for 35 years.

She is survived by two sisters Sandra Lou Lester Morris and Sarah Kathryn Lester Tunis. Her three children are Scott Austin and wife Michelle, Michael Austin and wife Shawn, Julie Austin Cortez and husband Charles. Six Grandchildren Sophie, Kori, Michaela, Brianna, Alexa and Cody Austin and four Great Grandchildren Judy, Amelia, Robert and Tynlee.

In 1957 Judy was one excited teenager when she was able to obtain tickets and attend the “Elvis” live and in concert performed at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. She was a great fan of Elvis and was one of the mourners at Graceland Memphis, Tennessee shortly after his death. Judy attended Mesquite “Skeeter” High School and graduated in 1963. She was in band and played the snare drum. In 1961 the band was invited to perform on New Year’s Day in the “Rose Bowl” Parade in Pasadena, California. This was one of Judy’s proudest moments.

In 1964 Judy graduated from Eisenhower Beauty College to become a hairdresser. This was her occupation for 54 years.

For years Judy was a State Fair of Texas and Community award-winning Pastel Artist. She enjoyed drawing Country music and TV entertainer portraits and most of all her precious grandchildren.

Judy was a follower of Jesus Christ and attended church regularly. She loved her family and didn’t want to leave but she was comforted in the fact that she knew heaven was waiting for her.

Grove Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park will officiate the funeral and burial.
