Kenny Lamont Smith, known as ‘Bubba’ to most of his family, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2020 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 63. He was born in Commerce, Texas on June 14, 1957, to Richard Wayne Smith and Patty Lou Bishop Smith.
He was a 1975 graduate of W. W. Samuell High School where he played the French horn in the Junior High and High School bands. All through high school, he was always tearing up the streets of Pleasant Grove on his Yamaha motorcycle. He was fearless and loved to pop wheelies regardless of who was on the back. He loved the open road and would spend the rest of his life riding with friends and family.
After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Vicky Wilson (Oberkrom), in 1977 and worked as a Manager at Butler’s Shoes for a few years. When he decided to move on from Butlers, he began contracting and remodeling houses and even did a full remodel of his first home. He was always good with his hands, could fix anything, a true jack-of-all-trades. In 1984 his daughter, Amber Nicole Smith, was born to one happy man. He held her in a special way. He’d always say “She’s just like me, only smarter.” Like the things he passed on to his daughter, he has left his mark on every one of us through his love and laughter.
After Kenny and Vicky divorced, he remained in the Dallas area working different jobs through 1992. Kenny was very mechanically inclined and became a mechanic for Wilson’s Auto behind his home. When he married Patty Thurik in 1996, they lived in Garland, Texas. He loved taking his daughters, Amber and Heather, to watch him race funny cars at Kennedale Speedway, as well as bowling in the leagues at Showplace Lanes. He’d always lend a helping hand when fixing cars, it’d be your hand, but he’d make sure you got the job done right as Jason and many men in this family can attest too.
After Kenny and Patty separated, he continued advancing his career with a promotion to Service Manager, at Clay Cooley Hyundai. In 2013, he and Joanna Carcelli moved to Forney, Texas. They bought their first home together where he spent the rest of his years. While living in Forney, he worked as a Service Manager for Young Chevrolet. He and Joanna loved spending weekends away in the country and watching the sunset together. He also liked relaxing Sunday afternoons enjoying his Sweetpea’s home cooking and watching Gunsmoke.
Kenny loved Friday nights, fishing and deer hunting with his friends, and family get-togethers. He could be found most weekends at his lease prepping for the next season. He had the ability to connect with anyone and loved making people laugh. He always had a grin on his face and loved to enjoy an “ice cold beer” with his friends after a long hard day. He left behind a legacy of love and laughter that we will all hold dear. Aaahhhhhhhhiiiiieeeeee!!!
Kenny was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Patty Smith; and brother Michael Smith. He is survived by Joanna Carcelli of Forney, Texas; daughter, Amber (Chris) Womack; step-daughter Heather (Jason) Bertucci, grandson Landon; brother, Tracy (Cheryl) Smith; sister-in-law, Brenda Smith; nephew Terry (Brandi) Smith, nieces Ashley (Dedrick) Blair, Abby Smith, and Amy Jones; aunt, Betty Cunningham; cousins (more like brothers and sisters), Vatonia (David) King; Teresa (Mike) Killingsworth; and many other great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
