He attended Linden Kildare Schools in east Texas during his childhood years. His family later returned to Dallas where he attended Lisbon Elementary, Boude Storey Middle School and South Oak Cliff High School where he graduated in 1976. Lawrence came to know and love The Lord at an early age and never strayed from his Christian upbringing. Lawrence met and married Jacqueline Appasamy in 1978. To this union, they had 2 daughters, Monique Marie and Lorion Lashun.
Lawrence’s employment started at Sears Roebuck and Co, where he worked for 30+ years until his retirement. During this time he also earned a certification in air conditioning repair and became all-around handy in mechanics and repairs. His last employment was independent contracting providing armed security.
Being number 6 of 9 children, Lawrence always loved and appreciated a large family. When he heard of a coming grandchild or grand-niece or nephew, he would say with a smile “just add a couple more beans in the pot.” He would often refer to his beloved Mom as “The Mother of the Nations”, as he was so proud of his daughters and family. At family get-togethers, he was the one with the camera making sure to capture a shot of every family member. He loved visits with his grandchildren, watching them sing or dance. He spent time teaching his nieces and nephews how to play and come to love chess. Lawrence had a “brother’s bond” with his friends from grade school through adulthood, with all 3 living on the same street and getting together daily to play dominoes.
Lawrence was known among his friends and family as being wise and well respected. He studied The Word on a daily basis and would usually give encouragement and wisdom by quoting scriptures. Most of those who met him, believed him to be a cool guy, dropping knowledge and wisdom without judgement and always with love. He was the kind of guy we all wanted to be like or hang out with.
During time alone he would spend this time working in his vegetable and herb garden, fishing or cooking. He had a deep love and pride for his garden, which he also got from his mother, and wouldn’t hesitate to take you out and show off anything from strawberries to cucumbers, green beans and tomatoes to several types of herbs. On nice days he would take his fishing gear with him in case he wanted to go to the lake in the early mornings after work. He recently picked up a love for cooking, excited to try to new things like black garlic.
To his grandchildren and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, Papa or Uncle Lawrence, would encourage you to be better than the generation before you. He was and will always be so proud of you. Before leaving, he would encourage us all to “stay prayed up.”
Lawrence was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers Jimmy Ralph, Harold Wayne and Gordon Taylor Horsley. He leaves to carry on his legacy: his children Monique (Nathan) Franklin and Lorion Horsley; grandchildren, Chadrick, Khadijah, Jada, Joslyn, Dieonna and Ezra; great-granddaughter Ivonna; ex-wife and friend Jacqueline Horsley; siblings Mattie Woolen-Clay (Clarence), Arnold (Louise), Frederick, Linda Horsley Abner, Vercie Pruitt-Jenkins (Robert); and a multitude of nieces and nephews and even more cherished family members and friends.
Sunset for Lawrence was March 14, 2022.
