Les moved to Dallas shortly after high school and enrolled in the Terminal Engineering Student Training Program at UT Arlington. He alternated attending school for 9 weeks and working for Dallas Power & Light Company for 9 weeks until he completed the program. This began his almost 40 year career with DP&L.
Shortly after moving to Dallas, he met and married Willie Louise Pyron Barger on September 9, 1960. Together, they raised two children. They were married just shy of 50 years before her passing. On September 30, 2012, he married Patsy Weaver Barger.
Les was an active member of Pleasant Terrace Baptist Church and later, Grandview Baptist Church. He was honored to serve as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, on various committees, and as a volunteer for jobs around the church.
In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, woodworking, playing and watching sports, serving as a volunteer for Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall, and especially spending time with family.
Les is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Edgar and Nettie Christian Barger; his first wife, Willie Louise Pyron Barger (d. 2010); his brothers, Rayford Barger, Bill Barger (Cleo), Billy Joe Barger, and Jerry Barger; and his sisters, Velma Garrett and Glenda Tucker.
He is survived by his second wife, Patsy Weaver Barger; his daughter, Lisa Buckmaster, along with husband Greg; his son, Stephen Barger, along with wife Kimberli and family; his sister, Wynema Hamilton (Bruce); his granddaughters, Brooke Boudreaux (Jeff), and Ashley Buckmaster; his sisters-in-law, Betty Scott, Louise Barger, and Susie Ward; and a beautiful extended family of nieces and nephews and wonderful friends.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staffs at Brookdale Whiterock, Villages of Lake Highlands, and VNA Hospice for all of their help in caring for Mr. Barger.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society and Grandview Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, April 30, at 1:30 pm at Grandview Baptist Church, 1401 I-30, Mesquite, TX 75150. A reception will immediately follow.
