We are grateful for you! A Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Five generations that's what is flowing within our family tree. Mom-ma you guided us with your mother, who guided you and led you from Corsicana, Texas where you were born. The only girl with two brothers, LV Jones and Oscar Johnson, Jr. who preceded her in death.
Then you married Leon Gowans after moving to Dallas, Texas and remained married for fifty-six years until his death. To this union three daughters were born, Diann, Jo Ann, and Norma Jean (deceased).
Lorene and her young family soon after moving to Dallas, led by her mother, Mrs. Irene Bennett who was already an established usher, was instrumental in coordinating her journey to Christian discipleship. With the leadership of Dr. G.A.H. Sheppard, the foundation for the great commission (Matt 28:19) was instilled biblically. Mom and her mother knew that they had to establish Christian values and morals if the girls were to have a stable and thriving life. Lorene worked hard with little resources to provide piano lessons, the best in dress and groom and with the core of the church at her side. Lorene became active in ministries and her girls soon excelled in choir and ministries. Mom-ma Lorene will be remembered for her tall statue, well dress, often called “Sister”, “Aunt Lorene”, or just plain Mom-maa!!!!
Lorene is preceded in death by her mother, Irene Bennett; husband, Leon Gowans; daughter, Norma Jean Gowans-Ragsdale; great-granddaughter, Abyss Gray.
Those who remain to cherish her memory but find it hard to say goodbye are, daughters, Diann Gowans-Ellis and Jo Ann King; son-in-law, Wanza King; grandchildren, Lelandia (Cookie) Gowans, Demekus Gowans, Kameron King, Eboni Gray; great-grandchildren; Christaan Montgomery, Noah Fields, Tielah Gowans and Colby Gowans; eight great-great grandchildren; multiple nieces and nephews (Gowans family); a special niece, D. Elaine Johnson-Wallace and Leticia Butler. We praise God for our family who have labored along this triumphant journey.
