Louie Mae Humphrie, affectionately known as “Granny” was the first of five children born to the parentage of Charles and Amanda Thompson. Louie was born on June 25, 1925, in El Paso, Texas but moved with her family to San Antonio at an early age. Many people do not know that her father’s mother was Hispanic and that Spanish was Louie’s first language. In fact, she was eight years old before she started to speak English.
Louie attended Sojourner Truth Elementary School in San Antonio. She graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1943. She later attended Madam C. J. Walker Cosmetology School and received her beauty license.
In 1946, Louie Mae met and married Theodore Humphrie, who preceded her in death. To this union four children were born. Shortly after marrying, the couple moved to Tyler, Texas where Louie worked as a manager of a school cafeteria. The family moved to Dallas in 1957, and she worked as a maid in a beauty salon, which inspired her to go to beauty school. From that time until she retired in 2011, Louie pursued her career as a beautician and worked in two different beauty salons.
Louie Mae accepted Christ at an early age. She joined El Bethel Baptist Church shortly after moving to Dallas. She later joined St. Paul A. M. E. Church under Rev. W. E. Carter and remained a faithful member until she was called to her eternal reward on January 27, 2018.
Louie liked to travel and was blessed to go to Washington, DC; Lompoc, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Atlanta, Georgia; Kansas City, Missouri; New York City; and numerous cities throughout Texas. Her favorite place to visit was New York City because her eldest grandson, Isaac, lives there.
Louie was a sports fanatic and enjoyed watching just about any kind of sporting event. She also enjoyed watching soap operas and especially enjoyed gardening shows.
She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Charles & Amanda Thompson; brother, Charles Thompson; stepson, James B. Humphries; and daughter, Theodora Y’Barbara Justice.
Louie leaves to cherish her memories: two sons, Kenneth Humphrie (Loretta) and Vernon Humphrie (Rebecca); one daughter, Rev. Marilyn Humphrie; first grandson, Isaac; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three sisters, Odessa Gilmore of Lompoc, California, Mary Hamilton and Sandra Lowe, both of San Antonio, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
