

She was the life of the party. Martie Matthews passed away on May 21, 2013 at age 95. Born in Malvern, Arkansas on October 17, 1917, Martie was the fifth of six children. After graduating college with a teaching degree, she followed her two sisters to Thomaston, Georgia where she met her husband, Tom. After WWII, they settled in Dallas and Martie taught home economics at Highland Park Junior High while Tom finished dental school and built a successful orthodontic practice. Over the years as she raised her three children, Martie served as President of the Alliance of Dallas County Dental Society and an organizer of activities for the 200+ wives who attended the Southwest Dental Conference in Dallas each year. Since 1949, she was a member of Highland Park Methodist Church and a charter member of the Two by Two Sunday school class. Martie was an expert seamstress, deer hunter, chef and party planner. She loved people and that love was returned by her many friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Tom, and her daughter, Cindy Matthews Leitch. She is survived by her older sister, Mary Keith Freeman, daughter Vicki Bejcek and husband John, son Tom Matthews, Jr. and wife Cindy, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest, 7405 Northwest Highway, Dallas, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation for the Dr. Tom and Martie Matthews Lectureship, 3600 Gaston Avenue, Suite 1151, Dallas, Texas 75246 or to the charity of your choice.
