Mary “Margie” Castillo Romero was born on August 19, 1947, at 8:00 PM at Florence Nightingale Hospital.
At the age of 77, our beloved Queen went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2025, at 10:23 AM. After suffering a stroke in October 2024 and battling underlying heart failure, she fought the good fight with unwavering faith until she took her last breath peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.
As 2 Timothy 4:7 reminds us, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Mary attended St. James Catholic School and Bishop Dunne High School, where she graduated before pursuing higher education to become a bilingual secretary. She dedicated 26 years to working with children and parents in early childhood programs with the Dallas Independent school District before retiring.
A true history maker, Mary was deeply involved in the fight for justice and equality. As an active member of LULAC, she championed farm workers’ rights and played a role in the Santos Rodriguez justice movement. Her unwavering dedication to these causes reflected her profound love for her community and her relentless pursuit of fairness and dignity for all.
Mary’s life was transformed through her Christian faith, and she passionately shared the love of Jesus. She was involved in Overcomers Recovery, Prison Fellowship, and Flame Igniting New Life Ministries. Opening her home to those in need, she touched countless lives with her compassion and generosity. Mary was a light in this dark world, and her legacy will live on through the many stories and memories of those who had the privilege to know her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Donald Ferguson, and Ysidoro Romero; her brother, Johnny Romero; her sister-in-law, Janelle Romero; and her granddaughter, Rebecca Rosas.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Sabino Castillo Banda; her son, Jesus Castillo, and daughter-in-law, Ana Castillo; her loving daughters, Cynthia Ann Woodley and Christina “Tina Marie” Maldonado; her siblings, Mary Jane Romero Orozco and Jesse Ray Ferguson Romero; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
