Mike is pre-deceased by his parents and his wife, Carolyn.
Mike attended Highland Park schools graduating in 1959. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from SMU in 1964. During that time he was in the co-op program with Texas Instruments and also carved out time to participate on the Southern Methodist University Swim Team. He was also a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He received his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1965.
He returned to Dallas and joined IBM as a computer programmer and educator. He continued his career with IBM in Beaumont. During that time as a carefree bachelor he took up flying as a past time. He later returned to Dallas before being assigned to Germany to teach computer skills to members of the US Air Force. He had skills with the German language prior to the assignment, but he became very fluent in the language and later provided technical support to the local IBM offices, also. He took advantage of the geography and visited every country in Western Europe twice and in Eastern Europe once. He also escalated his fitness interest through participation in local 10K and Marathon races earning numerous trophies. He returned to the US and was assigned to the San Francisco office. In the early 1980’s he opened his own computer consulting practice and then relocated to Dallas.
After his return to Dallas, he met and married Carolyn Evans in 1986.
They enjoyed attending concerts with the Dallas Symphony and Dallas Guitar Society. They enjoyed hosting friends for dinners with their gourmet cooking skills and pairings of fine wines. They both were active with the Cooper Fitness Center, not only to compensate for the great dinners but for Mike to continue his enjoyment of swimming and racing. They enjoyed the companionship of their Dobermans, Stasha and Inge. They were active members of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church where Mike enjoyed serving as an usher.
When Carolyn developed symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease Mike became her devoted caregiver. He worked with the clergy and members of Saint Michael’s to establish a caregiver support group. She remained at home until he realized it was no longer a safe environment for her. He moved her to facilities that could provide her with the needed support and continued to visit her every day.
Mike did not recognize the symptoms of the same disease being exhibited in him. The family helped keep him in his home for a few more years before it was necessary for him to be placed into a full care facility at Monticello West where he resided for the last 5 years. The family is extremely grateful for each of the staff members and aides who cared for him on a daily basis with their love and compassion.
A memorial service will be held on August 12, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas Ave. Dallas. A reception will held in the church parlor following the service. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
