January 7, 1946 – April 5, 2018
Our mother was supposed to be born at our Grandmother’s house in her beloved Bishop, Texas, but because she came early she was one of the few Hispanics in her town to be born at the hospital in Kingsville, Texas on January 7, 1946. She was the last child of Rafael Rogelio Aguilar Davila† and Reyna Barrera Davila†
She had four sisters and one brother, Elida†, Margarita, Dominga, Eva and her honored brother Rojelio Barrera Davila, Jr.†
Although Bishop would remain in her heart throughout her life she moved to Dallas, Texas when she was thirteen years-old. On every return visit to Bishop, as recently as a year or two ago, she still ran into cousins and friends and would always remember them by name.
Soon after in Dallas, she married our father Henry Gonzales Martinez. For her first child she would return to Bishop, Texas to be with our Grandmother and I was born in 1965 in Robstown, Texas. My sisters and twin brothers would be born during her years in California, but my youngest brother would be a Tejano as well.
My Mother talked to everyone and made friends wherever she went. Her resting pose was a light up the room smile. A smile that would hold us through the natural lows of life. Our Mother believed that we were all made in God’s image and although she was raised Pentecostal we were raised at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Timothy Gollob, Sister Patricia and Sister Linda.
My Grandmother, Father and sister were called to their heavenly home within months of each other. These were sad times for our family, but our Mother led us through and we finally experienced the soaring highs of life. We all married gave my Mother many grandchildren. Rocio and I had a son Heryk Alan Martinez † unfortunately he joined his family in heaven too soon. Gina and Jose Carmen (Mitos) Leon had a daughter and son, Erica Michelle (Canizales), Henry Florencio; Tina and Alfonso Hernandez had Orlando; Rafael and Judy had Cecilia Ann and Anthony Rafael; Rojelio would give her the most grandchildren: Amberley Nikole (Portales), Marissa Lorraine, Rojelio, Jr. and Adrianna Rafaela; and Josue would round out the grandchildren with Destiny Garcia and Josue Luis, II.
My Mother enjoyed many roles in life including President of the T.L Marsalis PTA where she was granted a lifelong membership with the Texas Parent Teachers Association.
Late in life our Mother would marry Ramiro Elizardo. Sadly, he would pass after nearly 20 years of marriage.
Our Mother had many joys including garage sales and dollar store bargains. Her house is full of irresistible talking fish and dancing dolls to the delight of her great-grandchildren: Eric
Santiago Canizales, Ariaa Hailie Martinez, Emerie DeLuna Martinez, Nevaeh Janelle Martinez, Richard Portales, Jr., Nikolas Daniel Portales, Jose Carmen Castillo, Jr. and Natalie Lorraine Castillo.
Our parents enjoyed the honor of several Godchildren. We especially appreciate Paula and Adela Guevara who would visit and take my Mother on outings, recently to a birthday party in Corsicana. We are also appreciative of Baby Lucas Trevino. My Mother, Suzie, (Elaine Laposky), our sister through our Dad, and Lucas spent their days together and through the security cameras we would often see Lucas and Mom eating, singing and napping the day away. On Saturdays, she would say, Lucas doesn’t come today and on Sundays, Lucas comes tomorrow. Lucas we thank you for many of our Mother’s last joys. Her last photo is with you smiling as you enjoy a beautiful evening on her front porch.
We know that beautiful day was on her mind as she was called to her heavenly home the morning of Thursday, April 5, 2018.
