Her life was a shining example of that simple, yet profound faith. On April 28th, Jesus came and took her hand and led her home. She lived 85 wonderful years.
Pat was born in Rocky Ford, Colorado, to Henry and Ola Hawkins. She grew up on a farm in Kansas and learned the value of hard work and devotion to family. She also knew what it was like to be without and never hesitated to help someone in need.
While working at a cafe in Coffeyville, Kansas during high school, Pat met a handsome baseball player. He would sit and fold napkins with her. One date was all it took. Roger and Pat married in 1953 and were blessed with 66 beautiful years together.
A true Southern lady, Pat had exquisite taste and loved her home. She was a gifted cook and gardener. Much of her time was spent enriching the lives of her neighbors, teaching Sunday School, taking Chicken Spaghetti or Chocolate Chip Pound Cake to someone in need and loving her country. An American flag flew proudly daily outside her home.
Pat worked as a telephone operator while Roger completed his college degree in Tulsa. Their first child, Rebecca Ann, was born in 1959. Together they moved to Dallas in 1960 when Roger joined Southern Gas Association (SGA). Their second daughter, Lori Lynne, was born in 1961. Dallas became their home.
Pat took up tennis and golf, playing at Bent Tree Country Club. She had two holes-in-one. She and Roger traveled the world with SGA. Many of their closest friends were made during that time.
Pat was a very active volunteer, serving for many years in the Republican Party and as a member of Northwood Republican Women (NRW). She was President of NRW in 2006. She received many awards for her service. One of her favorite activities was welcoming the troops at DFW airport with cookies and waving the American flag. In 2011, Pat was chosen as Republican Volunteer of the Year for Senate District 8, Dallas County. Pat encouraged everyone to vote.
Pat was blessed with two grandmother names – Granny Pat and Pitty Pat. Each of her five grandchildren was her favorite. She took great joy in every part of their lives. She and Roger had three great-grandsons, two of whom share the Reid name. Her face would light up just thinking about them. What a legacy of love. Yes, Pitty Pat, Jesus did pack you a suitcase and in it He had everything that you needed.
Pat was preceded in death by her mother Ola Bereman Hawkins; her father Henry Arthur Hawkins; her brothers Bob, Daniel, Dale and Walter Hawkins; her sister Helen Hawkins; and her granddaughter Meredith Wilkerson.
She is survived by her husband, Roger; her daughter Becky Borders and husband Steve; her daughter Lori Wilkerson and husband Gordon; her five grandchildren: Jonathan Borders and wife Amy; Elizabeth Combs and husband Jonathan; Rachel Wilkerson and husband Jon Harrison; Ellen Wilkerson and Caroline Wilkerson; her three great-grandchildren: Reid Borders, Graham Borders and Calvin Harrison; and many much loved in-laws, nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family graveside service at Sparkman/Hillcrest Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date in Faith Chapel at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
