

Retired USMC Major, entrepreneur, Boy Scouts of America mentor, husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at his home in Dallas, TX, after a hard-fought battle with cancer on April 30, 2025.
Born in Seattle, Washington on June 2, 1943, to USMC Brigadier General Philip W. John and Patricia Fiset John. Phil grew up a proud military brat, living across the U.S. and overseas. Graduating from Forest Sherman High School in Naples, Italy, in 1961. He went on to study Political Science and Economics at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, graduating in 1966.
Phil was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1966, and served in Vietnam, mainly north of Danang. Serving with the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Bridge, and 7th Engineer Support Battalion. Following active duty, he continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserves until 1985. He remained active in the VA and Marine Corps Reserves communities in Dallas after retirement. Phil personified the Marine motto, Semper Fi and lived in that spirit every day.
After his time in the Corps, Phil began his civilian career moving to Dallas to work at American Airlines. Later moving into the technology sector at Mostek before founding his own technology company in 1985. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to build several other companies in the tech sector, working passionately until his final days.
Yearning for the camaraderie of service, Phil joined the Boy Scouts of America alongside his son, Jordan. He became a devoted leader and mentor, helping guide a generation of scouts in Troop 124, serving on Eagle Board of Review Committees and many other roles for Circle Ten Council. His dedication earned him the highest award a Council can bestow for exceptional and distinguished service, the Silver Beaver Award.
Phil is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Kathy, son, Jordan, daughters, Allison and Beth; and his cherished granddaughter, Kate. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, community and unwavering support for his family and large circle of friends.
He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his endless trove of stories and facts, his unwavering integrity, and his rare ability to make a friend wherever he went.
A service and celebration of life will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 2:00 pm. A military funeral with honors will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 1:15 pm.
