

Rafaela "Rafa" Peña born Rafaela Molina Mendoza to Maurico & Tirza Mendoza on August 31, 1931, in Balleza, Chihuahua. She was raised in Mexico with 7 siblings. Her love ones knew her as; Granny Rafi, Little Grandma, Mama, Abuelita, Mom, Amalia, Madre, Madre Mia, Mother and Sra. Mendoza.
She married Fernando Soto, Sr. at the age of 19 and together had 5 children: Robert, Jose, Bertha, Esperanza and Fernando, Jr. They parted ways in 1960.
In 1962, she married Manuel Peña they became parents to Luis and Victor Peña. Rafa and Manuel moved to Dallas, Texas for a better future in which all children have become productive members of society.
While Rafa was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if many others looked to her for inspiration, leadership, wisdom and even courage. She was always more willing to share life’s experiences with her loved ones. Rafa can be best described as: The Matriarch of the family, Outspoken, Strong, One in a million, Independent, Wonderful, Excellent listener, Kind, Thoughtful, Always there, Helpful, Sweet, Brave, Fighter, Reliable, Understanding, Best friend, Patient, Amazing, and Cornerstone. She opened her home as well as her heart, never looking or thinking twice. Rafa never expected anything in return. The simple fact that she was able to assist brought joy to her life. She loved Vicente Fernandez, Los Tigres del Norte, Los Broncos, Dancing, High heels, Music, Kept up with world events, Novelas, Gardening, Cooking and her Family.
Rafa passed away on July 4, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. She is survived by her 7 children, Robert Soto, Jose H. Soto, Bertha A. Bustillos (Soto), Esperanza Zuniga (Soto), Fernando L. Soto, Luis E. Peña and Victor M. Peña; 21 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, numerous in-laws and family members. Rafa will be always be missed, but never forgotten. Her legacy will live forever.
