

Ray Kinney was born on January 26, 1942 in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Plano High School in 1960. He attended North Texas State University, graduating with a Bachelors of Business Administration in 1966. He became a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the state of Texas. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after serving from 1962 to 1965.
Ray began his professional career by working at Shell Chemical Company in Houston, Texas as a Cost Accountant. He then moved into a position with Defense Contract Audit Agency, United States Defense Department as Auditor. He next went to work at Shermco Industries, Inc. from 1974 to 1984 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
In 1984, Ray started an electrical services company, Circuit Breaker Sales Company, Inc. He was Co-founder and Chief Financial Officer. Ray became partners with Finley Ledbetter and for 40 years Ray’s steady influence built a successful company that would grow to over 600 employees with a national presence. In 2020, Ray and Finley sold CBS and Ray retired to private life.
Ray’s passion was flying. He joined the Commemorative Air Force in 1989. He sponsored the CAF’s Corsair and P-40 and has flown both to exhibit at many airshows. He also performed with TORA TORA TORA by piloting the P-40. In addition to sponsoring aircraft, and paying tribute to veterans, Ray had a passion for educational programs sponsored by CAF. Ray also served two terms on the General Staff and Chief of Staff. Colonel Ray Kinney has personified the CAF’s mission of honoring American military aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance.
Ray added yet another hobby to his long list of accomplishments. After joining the Rolls Royce Owner’s Club in 2009, he met friends who introduced him to the world of car collecting. He set out to acquire cars that were among the most elegant-a collection which included Duesenbergs, French “Art Deco” automobiles and fine English cars. His very first time showing a car at Pebble Beach earned him a prestigious class award. He continued to show his fine fleet, earning top awards and often “Best of Show” trophies.
Ray was introduced to Bonnie DeAmbrogio in 1985 by his sister, Betsy. Bonnie was charmed by Ray’s Southern Gentlemanly manners. They married on January 30, 1988. They traveled the world, sometimes to participate in air shows and car shows, sometimes just for the pleasure of traveling and experiencing new places. They had a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter and devotion to one another.
Ray leaves behind a legacy of leadership and generosity. He was a mentor to many and loyal friend to all. He is remembered for his magnetic personality, sharp wit and generous spirit. He was an unforgettable force!
Ray was a beloved husband, brother, uncle and “Barba Ray” to his grand nieces, nephews and goddaughters and “Barba” to Teddy.
A visitation will be held on December 7, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, located at 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225.
The funeral service will take place on December 8, 2025, at 9:30 am at the same venue.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Commemorative Air Force - 12 Planes of Christmas 2025, Plane #1 - P-40 Warhawk.
