Robert Kirby, 75, passed away unexpectedly on October 12, 2025. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on June 23, 1950 and, after moving around to different states during his childhood, attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Missouri School of Medicine. In addition to meeting Jane, his wife of 45 years, he honed his specialities of oncology and hematology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. After getting married, they moved to Odessa, TX where Robert was one of the early partners with Texas Oncology. He retired after over 40 years of practice but remained active through board leaderships and his role with the IRB.
Bob was an unbelievable husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest qualities were his humility, incredible intelligence, and ability to make anyone feel special and loved. His personality was a grace to his family as well as countless colleagues and patients over the decades, all who admired him for his medical wisdom and unrivaled collegiality and bedside manner. He was a gift in so many ways and will be dearly missed.
In his retirement, he found solace in being “Doc” to his grandchildren alongside Gigi (Jane), riding one of his many bikes, and spending time at the lake. He also loved traveling and reading German books or magazines, and had recently rekindled his passion for drawing.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Lou Kirby, and brother Peter Scott Kirby. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane; brother Steve Kirby (Karen); children Ben Kirby (Jessica), Brian Kirby (Lisa), and Megan Kirby Spaeth (Michael); and grandchildren Charlie, Cora, Ellie, Cooper, Camden, Chloe, Beau, and Luca.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Sparkman Hillcrest (7405 W Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75225) on Friday, October 17. Reception to follow.
