Ruth Taulbee Glaze was born August 1, 1923 in Waco, Texas to Cora May Buckner and Curtis Taulbee and she died September 11, 2015 at home. Her father was advertising director for Cox’s Department Stores and he was transferred to Fort Worth in 1933 when the company expanded to that market. Ruth transferred to the Fort Worth schools and graduated from Paschal High School in 1941.
She entered Texas Christian University in the fall, 1941, but Pearl Harbor quickly shifted the college to a war-time pace. Classes were organized in trimesters to speed students through the academics. While in those year-round classes, she worked as a secretary in the School of Business and then as a legal secretary.
Ruth graduated with a BBA in 1944 and she went to work fulltime as a legal secretary. At Christmas, 1944, she met Bob Glaze on a blind date while he was in Fort Worth on leave from the Navy. They corresponded until he was discharged and returned to Fort Worth in 1945.
They married September 28, 1946, and began their family life together. Both Ruth and Bob were already long-time members of Broadway Baptist Church and soon they were both teaching Sunday School there. Ruth created a loving and gracious home for herself, her husband, and their children. Ruth was always a good friend, and she enjoyed friendships that date back to these days and even before.
In 1963 the family moved to Dallas because of a job change for Bob, and once more Ruth focused on establishing a home for them. They joined Park Cities Baptist Church and she again taught Sunday School. Her home always included beautiful gardens and a kitchen known for her hospitality—good food, graciously served.
Ruth was a member of the Dallas Woman’s Club, the Dallas Garden Club, the Mary K. Craig Class, and the Dallas Country Club. She was active in the women’s work at Park Cities Baptist Church and was a long-time member of the Monday Ladies Prayer Group. The Sunday School Class she taught was named in her honor and members of the Ruth Glaze Class, along with members of the Bob Glaze Class, are honorary pallbearers. She taught the Bible for well over 50 years and loved her teaching ministry.
Ruth began taking watercolor painting lessons at age 65 and she became a fine artist. For 23 years, the Glaze Christmas card was printed from one of her original paintings.
Ruth and Bob travelled extensively over the years. They made a great team together, supporting each other in all they did. Together they moved to Edgemere, where she lived out the last years of her life. Again, she made many friends and a beautiful home. Since 1972, Etta Simmons worked for Ruth as housekeeper, companion, and personal aide. Etta’s role was instrumental especially in the last years.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Katherine Glaze Lyle; her son, Carl Glaze, and his wife, Dixon. Her grandchildren include Sharon Lyle and husband, Mark Mutschink; Christopher Lyle and wife, Lyndsay; Melissa Glaze; Andrew Glaze and wife, Kate; Pete Glaze and wife, Christy. Also surviving her are seven great-grandchildren, Emerson Lyle, Hannah Lyle, Graham Lyle, Bennett Mutshink, Gwen Gleinser, Lily Glaze, and Wallis Glaze; sisters-in-law Nancy Taulbee and Miriam Schaefer; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; brother, Tom Taulbee; brother-and-sister-in-law Tony and Ruth Shober, and brother-in-law Ken Schaefer. Ruth was truly the heart of the family and we will miss her deeply.
A memorial service will be at the Ellis Chapel of Park Cities Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 15. Visitation will be at Sparkman Hillcrest from 5-7PM on Monday, September 14. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Glaze Endowment at Lumin Education, 924 Wayne St,, Dallas 75223 (lumineducation.org); Park Cities Baptist Church; or The Parkinson Voice Project.
