Thomas Andrew Giltner, age 81, of Dallas, Texas passed away on Monday, February 28, 2022. Tom was born April 29, 1940 in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas School of Law. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served as an Infantry Officer in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning). He continued his service as an Officer in the Army Reserves. Upon his return to Dallas, he began his career as an attorney, where he practiced general civil law for over 50 years. He was also a successful real estate investor and businessman.
A man of strong faith, Tom was devoted to his church, First Baptist Church, Dallas, where he was a member for over forty years. He served in a number of capacities, most recently in the Pastor’s Prayer Partners Ministry. He was an extraordinary Bible scholar, self taught in Greek and Hebrew, and joked that he enjoyed conjugating verbs in Latin for fun.
Tom had a wide range of interests, all of which he pursued with great zeal. His interest in politics led to his job as Precinct Chairman for many years (and many, many elections). He had a passion for 1950’s 3-D movies, noir films, 1953 Pontiacs, travel, history, and ragtime music. He had a life-long love of learning and was an avid reader, and remembered what he read and where he read it!
He was blessed with a rapier quick wit that kept friends and family in stitches. He was fun to talk to, fascinating to hear speak, and left all in awe of his exceptional memory. He loved to share his knowledge and expertise with others and was a wonderful mentor. He was a devoted son and brother and a generous and loving friend. The world is a better place for the time he spent here.
Tom was a person of tremendous intellect, integrity and generosity. He lived a life of service to God, his country, his church, his family and friends, and his community. He leaves behind a host of family and friends to cherish his influence and memory. We will miss his deep love, his trusted friendship, his remarkable brilliance, and his generous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Alice Giltner. He is survived by his sister, Carol Torgrimson (Peter); cousins, Sharon Moran (Scott), Howard Horton (Libby) and Tom Horton (Sandi); and second cousins, Robert Horton (Natalie), Dena Horton, Jake Moran (Emily), Allison Hare (Seth), Angela Carpenter (Landon), Erica Duncan (Chris) and Tyler Horton.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 17, 2022 at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Dallas, Truett Chapel, 1707 San Jacinto Street, Dallas, TX 75201.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Dallas or The American Heart Association.
