Wanda Melton was born on December 18, 1928 in Greenville, Texas to Victor Alvin and Ethel Ike (Davenport) Melton. That day was filled with turmoil and prayer for both Ethel and the newborn infant. Wanda was not expected to live due to hard long delivery and being very small in size, but she showed to be strong willed and that she was a fighter. She was determined to survive the impossible then as well through out her life.
Wanda was the 3rd child born and soon after would be a big sister to a little brother she came to love dearly with all her heart. Being close in age, both seem to cherish the fun they could have growing up, while two older siblings, one brother headed off to join the navy and be a gunner in WWII, and one sister headed off to make a life as well as she could afford during such a time of a world war.
Wanda grew up in Greenville, Texas, and while in middle school, the family moved to City Park, or South Dallas, on Park Avenue. The was a prime neighborhood for raising a young family. Wanda and little brother, Billy Vic, seemed to always watch cover each other and make those little white lies to cover up any trouble while playing practical jokes.
Those practical jokes continued into adulthood by Billy on his sister. Sandi and I can remember many times the phone would ring for some outrageous 'named person' that should live at the number, EX1-7922 dialed by the caller (aka Billy Vic), her little brother.
Upon high school graduation, Wanda met William Harrison Myers, Jr., and married him at 19 years old. This union produced a wonderful handsome son, William H. Myers, III, in 1948. Unfortunately, this marriage was not to last and ended in divorce, in which Wanda agreed to give up her son to the father to raise. This was a wound within Wanda that would never heal, it left a void in her heart until the day when she sees and meets "W.H." again in Heaven, in Glory.
In 1952, Wanda was introduced to "Cotton" aka, George Bragg. He was 13 years her senior and after a 13 day courtship, Cotton was determined to marry her. On May 24, 1952, they were married and this began a long union whose love grew deeper during hard times.
This marriage proved to give "W.H.", aka, Dubbie, a new father figure and one that would sure to grow in years of love for each other. In April 1953, a daughter, Paula, was born to Cotton and Wanda; in May 1958, a daughter Sandra, was born and in October 1963, finally a son, a "Bragg" boy was born to Cotton and Wanda. This son became the first Bragg boy to be born into the family in 46 years, George William Bragg, Jr. Yes, a "Junior", Cotton.
This marriage lasted until June 15th, 1988, when the Lord called Cotton home after a long illness. As most marriages, some times were rough and then there is smooth times in which all things worked together. After 36 years of marriage, came loneliness, guilt, regrets, and finally realization that there were more 'good times', more love shared and finally knowing that one day again they would be together forever and ever.
The Lord called Wanda home on October 14, 2010. She has reunited in heaven with her parents, her dear husband, George Bragg, Sr., her son, William Myers, III, a daughter, Brenda Sue Bragg, brothers, Walter Melton, Billy Melton and her sister, Helen Baker.
Wanda's precious memory will be cherished by her surviving 3 children, Paula Naylor of Dallas; Sandi Parker of Frisco; and George Bragg of Dallas. She will be missed by her 4 grandchildren, Kimberly Nelms, Joshua Naylor, Brandon Grimes, Ashleigh Becker and 10 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family and a host of friends.
The family will greet friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Grove Hill Funeral Home Chapel, 3920 Samuell Blvd. Dallas,Texas. Funeral Services to begin at 2:00 p.m. following the visitation. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 18, 2010 at Grove Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made to Arc, the organization that has benefited our brother, George Bragg greatly. Submit donations to Arc of Dallas, 12700 Hillcrest, Suite 200, Dallas, TX 75230 (214) 634-9810 or visit www.ArcDallas.org.
