

Wayne A. Melton of Dallas died on December 17, 2012, at 92 years of age. Born in Eastland County, Texas on February 17, 1920, the son of William Andrew and Grace Melton, Wayne grew up in the Corsicana area of Navarro County. After graduation from Powell High School in 1937, he attended Baylor University. On July 1, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, later becoming a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division’s 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment during the Southern Philippines Campaign. After his active duty, he was transferred to the Judge Advocate General’s Department, continuing to serve as an active reservist until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel. With his beloved wife Jean Schaffnit Melton, he was among the founding members of St. Monica Catholic Church. A graduate of Southern Methodist University School of Law, he was a 50 year Emeritus Member of the Dallas Bar Association. Wayne was also an active member and leader of numerous professional, civic, church and community organizations. He asked to be remembered as a third generation native Texan, a loyal citizen and patriot and a devoted son, father, husband, and family member. He is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Melton and Brian D. Melton, two daughters, Carol Melton Norris and Mary Elaine Melton, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 20, 2012 in the Old Church at St. Monica from 6:30 until 8:00 PM, with a Vigil Service starting at 7:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM Friday in the New Church at St. Monica. If desired, memorials may be made to the St. Monica School Endowment Fund, 9933 Midway Road, Dallas, Texas 75220.
