William Stewart “Bill” Hooton – Bill was born on May 9, 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Brooks and Frances Hooton. Since his father was an Air Force pilot, Bill spent his earliest years on a number of Air Force bases but most of his growing up was in Pittsburg, Texas. After graduating from Pittsburg High School, Bill came to Southern Methodist University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the SMU varsity golf team. He graduated with a B.S. degree in 1962.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Margaret Minnett Hooton, his daughters Lydia and her husband Justin Jordan and their daughter Maggie of Dallas, Texas; Brooke and her husband Scott Elder and their children Sarah and Will of Atlanta, Georgia; and Mandy and her husband John Rutherford and their daughters Tegan and Piper of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Mary and her husband Tim Hardin of Dallas, Texas and his mother-in-law, Lydia Minnett and brother-in-law, Tuck and his wife Betsy Minnett of Dallas, Texas. He is further survived by his niece Ginnie and her husband Blake Bagby, and his nephews John Minnett and his wife Crissy, Stewart Mers and his wife Alicia, and Bill Mers.
For most of his working life, Bill was very successfully involved in various aspects of the real estate business and the oil and gas business. He never met a stranger and is loved by everyone who knew him. In his heyday he was a scratch golfer and loved to hunt and fish. One of his favorite activities was playing gin rummy with his pals at Dallas County Club.
Bill enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren and looked forward to the times when all of his family could be together. He was larger than life and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. We love you, Pop Pop.
There will be a memorial service celebrating Bill’s life at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 3821 University Boulevard, Dallas Texas 75205.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Bill’s honor to the charity of your choice.
