Arline Katherine (“Kathy”) Lathrop of Brookfield, Connecticut, passed away on August 11, 2025, at the age of 78. She was born on May 18, 1947, in Danbury, Connecticut, where she lived until 1987 when she moved to Brookfield. She was a graduate of the 1965 Danbury High School class, the first class to graduate from the Clapboard Ridge school after moving from the White Street campus. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Western Connecticut State College.
She was a teacher in the Newtown Middle School until requested by the Superintendent of the Newtown School System to move to the then new Reed Intermediate School to help with the transition. She was instrumental in the development of Newtown’s core character attributes tree which now underscores their curriculum. Following her retirement in 2005 after 37 years in the Newtown School System, she worked as an adjunct professor for both Western Connecticut State University and Sacred Heart University until 2024 when health issues prevented her from continuing.
She was a member of Pi Lambda Theta, and an active member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys parish in Brookfield, where she volunteered her time as a religious education teacher.
She was an avid bowler and New York Yankees fan. She was a devoted follower of Geno Auriemma and the UCONN women’s basketball program and never missed a game. She loved cowboy films, both old and new, and she so loved the movie “The African Queen” and actress Katharine Hepburn that her golden retriever was named Rosie Sayer after the film’s main character. In her later years, she enjoyed watching “The Price is Right” because she declared, “this is the essence of America, there are no differences or prejudices, everyone genuinely cheers for one another.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Lathrop, Sr., and Arline Natalie (Barrett) Lathrop.
She is survived by her brother, Edward Lathrop, Jr. (Marie), her sister, Priscilla Garamella (Jack), her nephew, Justin Gozzi (Tory), her niece, Emily Brown (Edward), and her great nieces, Evangeline Brown and Cecilia and Mackenna Gozzi.
