Bette was a lifetime resident of Bethel, CT. She was born to Ray and Dorothy Muhlfeld Stelzel on 11-10-30. She lived next door to relatives on Highland Avenue developing a lifelong bond with her cousin Agnes Stelzel McNamara.
Bette attended Bethel schools where she walked to school. In high school, she met her sweetheart, Frank Briscoe. The two were married for 64 wonderful years and had a warm, loving relationship.
In their early years, the couple enjoyed getting together with Agnes and friends playing the piano and singing together often. Visiting the local Sycamore Restaurant was a favorite hangout for them.
As Frank continued his college education Bette supported him by working at the Southern New England Telephone Company where she worked as a Supervisor. After having children she worked part-time at the First National Supermarket.
Bette had a great sense of humor keeping her family laughing whenever together. Bette & Frank had four children, 14 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren, who were the absolute love of their lives. They have devoted grandparents incredibly proud of each one of them. “Nana”, as Bette was affectionately known, delighted in each of their accomplishments and milestones and was present to enjoy each one.
No one enjoyed a party more than Bette. Her laughter was contagious and constant. She was always ready to play a game with the family, that united the “Farkels”, a name that the family jokingly referred to themselves.
Bette was a kind and caring individual. She was a caregiver to her mother and Aunt for many years and both were blessed to be in her care.
Bette was known as a tremendous cook in the family. Everyone looked forward to family gatherings where she prepared the family favorites. She took great pride in providing a full meal every night for her family.
Bette enjoyed traveling all over the world, but Cape Cod was her favorite spot. Mostly because it was a beautiful spot that brought her family together for over 50 years. Although not a swimmer, she enjoyed wading in the water, sunning on the beach, and was a master at collecting sand dollars.
Bette was a devout Catholic attending Mass regularly throughout her life and watched the mass on tv in later years when she was unable to attend. She had a deep faith in both God and her religion. She was a member of Saint Mary parish her entire life and sang in the church choir for many years.
Bette loved walking and reading, the casinos, and the serenity of her back deck where she watched the numerous birds attracted to her feeders, with a Bloody Mary. Her greatest love, along with her family, was her sister and best friend, Jean. The two were inseparable and had a bond unlike any other. They saw each other daily and spoke on the phone multiple times a day. They laughed together and compared stories about grandkids, shopped together, and in their later years visited the cemetery daily where their parents were buried. When Jean predeceased Bette unexpectedly, Bette’s heart was broken.
Bette is survived by her four children, Mary (Gary) Raymond, Lisa (Bob) Plumb, Frank/Bub (Marlyn), and Sean (Marcey); Grandchildren: Lauren (Justin) Aube, Drew (Kristen) Raymond, Kelsey Raymond, Shane Raymond, McKenna Raymond, Bobby (Kathleen) Plumb, Ashley Plumb, Brandy Plumb, Tyler Plumb, Spencer Briscoe, Maxx Briscoe, Luke Briscoe, Grace Briscoe, Benjamin Briscoe, and Great Grandchildren: Maddie, Ava, James, Drew, Jackson, Kate, & Ryan; and many friends and relatives.
