
Betty was born in Danbury, a daughter of the late Thomas and Delia Crotty Wimsey. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Joseph School and a 1944 graduate of Danbury High School. Betty and her late husband, Don, operated Don’s Flowers in Danbury until their retirement in 1982. Betty later worked part time as an administrative assistant at St. Peter Cemetery in Danbury.
Active in the Girl Scouts when her children were growing up, she also became a Boy Scouts Den Mother. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Danbury.
Betty was a Charter Member of Danbury Drum Corps Auxiliary and their first President. She was also Treasurer for the Grassy Plain Drum Corps.
Besides her husband, who passed away in 2013 after 65 years of marriage, Betty was predeceased by her sisters: Mary Beard, Jeanette Walters and Kay Hartsburg.
Survivors include her son: Donald J. Melillo, Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Westchester, OH. Her daughter: Joyce DeGross and her husband, John, of Danbury. Also, the pride of her life who she loved dearly, her grandchildren: Tricia Andrews, Keri Peloso, Laurie DeGross, Kristin Melillo Metzger and Stephanie Melillo Finelli. 6 great-grandchildren also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10am at St. Joseph Church, Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 4pm-7pm at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
