Emma J. Spaulding, age 95 of Patterson, N.Y., went to the Great Beyond on January 7, 2022. Emma was born in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. on July 19, 1926, and was the youngest child of Ciriaco and Giuseppina Cardillo who came over from Naples, Italy. Born Maria Giuseppina Nicoletta Cardillo, but lovingly known to all as "Emma".
Emma attended Robert Fulton Schools in Mt. Vernon and went on to graduate from Our Lady of Victory School of Business. She was always determined and independent and was famous for telling us how things were "in her day". When you could walk all over New York City, where she worked at many different interesting jobs and factories. "It was a different world". Emma met the love of her life, Shirl Douglas Spaulding of Dixfield, Maine, when she attended a dance at Fort Slocum Army Post, New Rochelle, N.Y. They were married at the Church of St. Catherine, Pelham, N.Y. on November 4, 1950.
After their son Douglas was born, they had a dream to build their own home and bought the property in Patterson N.Y. in 1956. Unfortunately, Shirl passed away in 1962, but Emma was still determined to fulfill that dream. By working many extra part-time jobs, the dream was finally realized in 1973, an accomplishment she was extremely proud of!
Besides being a great Mom, Emma was also looked up to by her many nieces and nephews. She could always set you straight with her words of simple wisdom, life lessons, and advice. "Nothing is impossible", "Follow your dreams", and "Where there's a will there's a way". Help was always available if you needed it. She helped many and made many lifetime friends along the way.
Emma retired from Pitney Bowes, Newtown, Ct. in July 1996 at 70. Her main hobbies, besides great Italian cooking, were her unique gift of picking numbers to play the lottery and investing in stocks. Emma was devoted to all of us and we will miss her so much.
Emma is survived by her son Douglas and daughter-in-law Susan of New Fairfield, Ct. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Elisa Beckett-Flores (Josh), Niles Spaulding (Sabrina Mason), Jake Foote, great-granddaughter, Parker Beckett-Flores of New Fairfield, Ct., and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to especially thank all who cared for Emma during her last years, which allowed her to be independent and live at home. We will treasure that time always.
A service celebrating her life will be held at the Congregational Church, 20 Gillotti Rd., New Fairfield, Ct. 06812 on May 28, 2022, at 1:00 pm.
Emma had a special place in her heart for children that need Cleft Palate surgery, as she did. In lieu of flowers, consider a contribution to SmileTrain.org, helping children get this surgery in 87 countries.
