James Richard Shannon

J. Richard “Dick” Shannon, beloved husband of Joan M. Helgert Shannon passed away peacefully Monday, December 26, 2011 surrounded by his loving family at Danbury Hospital. Dick was born in Danbury, August 23, 1932 son of the late John A. Shannon and Margaret Gallagher Shannon. Dick, a lifelong Danbury/Bethel resident graduated from St. Peter’s School and Danbury High School. Upon graduation, Dick joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Argonaut SS475 for four years. When he was discharged, Dick became a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 38 until his retirement in 1994. Dick was a member of St Mary’s Church in Bethel, Korean War Veterans, and current member of Bethel Planning & Zoning.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Dick is survived by his seven loving children, Noreen S. Maier her husband Darrell and son Thomas; Vincent L. Shannon and his wife Elizabeth and daughter Rose; James E. Shannon and his wife Christine and children Kathryn and Ian; all of Danbury. Maura S. Bergman and husband David and children Benjamin and Tooley of Southbury; Daniel P. Shannon and wife Susan and children Michael, Allison and Kathleen of Cedar Knolls, NJ; Mark R. Shannon and wife Kelly and children Brendan, Tyler and Jack of Biglerville, PA; and Meghan S. Behnke and her husband James and children Claire and Emmett of Randolph, NJ. He is also survived by his brother William P. Shannon and wife Jane of Bethel and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers John, Edward, and Robert Shannon and sisters Nancy Potts and Kathryn S. Curran.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, December 31 at St Mary’s Church, Bethel. Burial will be at St Peter’s Cemetery, Danbury, CT. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 30th from 4-8pm at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St. Danbury, CT.
