John M. Cosentino, a resident of Danbury, CT for over 40 years passed away on October 11, 2019. He was born in Richmond Hill, N.Y. on Spetember 22, 1924 to the parents of Rosario and Barbara Cosentino who are deceased.
After receiving music awards, both in elementary and high school, he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to Anti-Aircraft. Shortly after, he was placed in the U.S. Paratroops. He is a disabled war veteran and is a member of the Catholic War Veterans. Under the G.I. Bill, he went to Columbia University where he majored in music and voice. He met his wife Marie Nesbitt from Elizabeth, New Jersey and they were married in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, N.Y.C. on October 23, 1954.
John is survived by his son, John Thomas and his wife Deborah. Mr. Cosentino taught for fifteen years at St. Michael High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. serving as Music Chairman.
He was known to his students as “Maestro”. He produced musicals and grand opera that were aided by ‘leads’ professionally. After leaving St. Michael H.S., Mr. Cosentino gave concerts in Carnegie Hall, N.Y.C. and other leading halls in the Tri-State area. He is credited with teaching voice to Jerry Stiller (TV), Vic Morrow (films), Stephen O’Marra (Met. Opera) and a host of Pageant winners. The American Theater Wing granted him a voice scholarship to study voice with Maestro Samuel Margolis, vocal mentor of many Metropolitan Opera singers. He is a member of the Connecticut Music Teachers Association and has been affiliated with the National Company of the Metropolitian Opera. He received an Honorary Decree from the State of Connecticut for “Life’s Achievements” awarded by State Representative Mary Ann Carson.
