Margaret Ann Davis was born in the Bronx, NY to James T. Tierney and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Tierney (neé Kelly) on August 14, 1945. Known to her family as Margaret, many referred to her affectionately as Marge. Margaret passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025 surrounded by her husband and four children.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Margaret was a graduate of Mt. Helena’s Business School where in her high school yearbook there was a small description that read, “Margie is quiet” and “her happy outlook on things will be a help to her in the business world.” Her first job was with the NY Real Estate Board in Manhattan.
Margaret spent the first years of her married life in the Bronx before she and her husband, Jim, moved their young family to New Fairfield, CT. She and Jim lived in “the country” as her Bronxite family called New Fairfield, for more than 50 years while raising their four children. Being a city girl, she didn’t earn her driver’s license until she was a mom of three!
She was a loving and patient mother and a dedicated homemaker, raising her children before being employed by Grolier, Inc (now Scholastic) and later, Danbury Hospital.
Margaret is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 58 years, James Davis, Jr. and their children: Matthew, Maureen Bialack (Chris), Marybeth Hines (Scott); and Megan Zabetakis (Chris). She is also survived by her twin brother, Joseph Tierney, sister-in-law Cookie (Margaret) Keating, nieces Cathy Crapa (Danny) and Karin Howe (Greg), as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins. She will also be missed by her best friend of 47 years, Mary Jo Olivieri.
Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her 15 grandchildren who were her absolute pride and joy. Nanny would brag about her Hooligans to anyone and everyone: Anna, Maura, Ryan, Andrew, Maggie, Kate, Lucy, Lily, Molly, James, Erin, Ellie, Patrick, Conor and Marin. She fostered a unique bond with each of her grandchildren and always made them feel valued and loved. They were truly her favorite people to spend time with. She and Poppy would have the grandchildren stay for sleepovers, watch movies, and tell stories every chance they could. Nan and Pop’s felt like their home away from home!
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her in-laws James Sr. and Margaret, her brothers Albert Lashway, James (Bella) Tierney and Raymond (Dorothy) Tierney, and her sisters Eileen (Chuck) Stannard and Theresa (Michael) Mulderrig.
She loved her Irish heritage and boasted about being 100% Irish. In fact, she wore being “Bronx Irish Catholic” as if a badge of honor! Despite living in Connecticut for the majority of her life, she never lost her Bronx accent. Any time you would walk into her home, she would be listening to happy Gaelic music or singing along to music from the ‘50’s or ‘60’s. Elvis was her favorite.
Margaret was happiest being surrounded by her large family, laughing and retelling stories from years gone by, and creating new memories with her children and grandchildren.
She had an unofficial (and quite literal) Open Door policy at home: anyone was welcome at anytime. She was an easy listener, offering advice when asked, laughter when necessary but could keep you humbled and grounded as only a mother could. Margaret believed family was the only important thing that mattered in life; taking care of one another and looking out for the other was a lesson she instilled in her children and grandchildren from an early age.
Margaret was recently diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Though it was only for a brief period, she fought through it as hard as she could and did her best to stay present to those she loved.
Friendly as ever, “Miss Marge” made friends with every nurse, every aide, and every caregiver while at Bethel Rehab Center. Her suffering was eased and made more tolerable by the gentle care she received. Her family would like to offer their sincerest thanks on her behalf to Sette, Nichole, Lauren, Dahlia, Johanna, Natalie, Meredith and countless others who carefully and lovingly helped ease her pain during the last two months.
A Visitation for Margaret will be held from 4:00pm - 8:00pm on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 21 Brush Hill Rd., New Fairfield, CT with the Rev. Timothy Iannacone officiating.
Burial will immediately follow at Mountain View Cemetery, CT-Route 37, New Fairfield, CT.
