Mary Burke was born on 10 May, 1952, in Danbury, CT to the late Marita Burke (née Delohery) and Thomas Burke. She was the third of four children: her late brother, Thomas, her brother Patrick, and younger sister, Joan. She attended New Fairfield Schools and Danbury High School. She went on to a long, successful career with the State of New York as manager of several Group Homes in Westchester County. She was especially fond of the residents at North Salem’s Group Home.
Mary was a dedicated, lifelong parishioner of St. Edward’s Church in New Fairfield and served as Eucharistic Minister and member of the Parish Council. After retiring in 2015, Mary enjoyed planning trips nationally and internationally. She particularly loved taking bus trips, and she visited a number of tourist destinations, from places as distant as Prince Edward Island to Jerusalem. Throughout her life, Mary was known for her tough exterior and heart of gold.
Mary is survived by her two siblings—Patrick Burke and sister-in-law, Wendy Burke, Joni Burke-Taylor and brother-in-law, Joe Taylor—and two nieces and one nephew, whom she loved very much and spoiled rotten: Katherine Burke, Colleen Taylor, and Daniel Taylor. Mary also leaves behind cousins in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, including Susan Delohery-Magersuppe, James and Cynthia Burke, Sean and Peggy Delohery, Stephen Burke, and their children, Meghan and Joey Stabile, Brian Burke, Erin and Brendan Delohery, as well as many, many friends whom she loved like family.
The Burke and Taylor families would like to thank the remarkable staff, nurses, and aides at Bethel Health Care, who gave Mary such loving care during her illness, especially Nurse Jamie. They would also like to thank doctors and nurses at Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mary’s name to the Danbury Hospital Development Fund - Praxair, 24 Hospital Avenue Danbury, Connecticut 06801.
A Wake will be held at Green Funeral Home in Danbury on Thursday, October 26th, from 5pm to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 27th, at 11 am at St. Edward Catholic Church in New Fairfield. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield.
