Mary J. McCourt

Mary was born on April 4, 1936, in Belfast, Ireland. At the age of 20, she married the love of her life, Patrick (Paddy) Gerard McCourt, predeceased. Together, with two small children under foot, they made their way to the United States and settled down in Stamford CT where they raised their four children.

Later they moved to Sarasota, Florida where they enjoyed a simpler life. Mary truly enjoyed her life in Florida and the community where she lived. She worked as a cashier at a local supermarket. Anyone who shopped or worked there new Mary. She had a way of making everyone she met feel like family and always greeted them with a warm smile and a quick “hello luv”.

Mary truly enjoyed family and spending time with her grandchildren. Her grandchildren will fondly remember her Irish versions of nursery rhymes that they can teach to their own children. She looked forward to family visits to her home in Florida. These were special times for her and she enjoyed taking her family through the community and introducing them to all her friends. She loved nothing more than having her family and her children’s friends gather at the house while she served a large meal with a wee piece of cake. She also enjoyed crocheting blankets and scarves for everyone in her family.

Mary is survived by her loving sister, Kathleen McCourt; her children: Anthony McCourt; Patrick (Colleen) McCourt; Rosheen (Tom) Rypel; and Michael (Michele) McCourt; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Glen Hill nursing facility staff for the fond affection they showed to Mary over the past few years while she was a resident.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Edward the Confessor Church, Brush Hill Rd., New Fairfield, CT on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 10:00 am.
