Born on April 18, 1990, in Stamford, CT, Michael lived a life defined by generosity, humor, and protection of others. He had a way of making people feel seen, supported, and cared for, and he carried that gift with him into every part of his life.
A graduate of Westhill High School, Michael discovered his love of ROTC during those formative years - a spark that would shape his devotion to service and discipline throughout his life. Following high school, he found his first true passion teaching martial arts in South Salem, NY. While working there, he became a member of the Vista Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT, where he discovered his deep love for “the job”. This path led him to work as an EMT and later as a 911 dispatcher, continuing to serve others with compassion, dedication and calm strength.
In 2021, Michael proudly began serving with the Fairfield Fire Department, a calling he loved deeply. His commitment, bravery, and camaraderie with his fellow firefighters reflected the best parts of who he was—selfless, loyal, and always ready to help others without question.
Michael lived with an unmistakable sense of passion and adventure. He trained in martial arts, which grounded him, challenged him, and gave him a place to continually grow in discipline and strength. He found peace in fishing— it was a pastime that brought him calm, focus, and joy. Michael also loved to travel, embracing every chance to explore new places, try new experiences, and create memories with the people he loved most.
Michael’s greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Kathryn (Katie), and their two cherished children, Michaela and William, who were the light of his life. He is predeceased by his brother Matthew Canil. Michael is also survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Maureen Canil, and sister Kristen Canil; mother and father-in-law Tony and Lynn Faugno; brothers-in-law William and TJ Faugno and family; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Michael touched countless lives with his kindness, quick wit, and unwavering compassion. Though his time here was far too short, the love he gave, the passions he pursued, and the impact he made will continue to be felt by all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
