Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he attended Tilden High School. He then went on to Syracuse University, where he majored in Political Science and graduated with a BA in 1953. At Syracuse he was a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and was Junior Class Treasurer and manager of the tennis team.
Peter served during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany from 1953 – 1955 as a public information officer, sending news of the First Infantry Division to U.S. Newspapers. Some of his articles appeared in Stars and Stripes. When his service ended, Peter entered a combined program at Cornell University’s Law School and Business School, earning both a law degree and a MBA in four years. He was admitted to the Bar in 1959.
Upon graduation, he gained expertise in securities law working at the SEC in Washington, D.C. In 1961 the family moved to Westchester County, NY and he began a long and successful career as a corporate and securities attorney in private practice in Manhattan, focusing on public and private offerings, compliance and corporate oversight. Peter retired in 2009.
An avid tennis player, Peter was often seen playing tennis or paddle tennis at the Birchwood Swim and Tennis Club in Chappaqua, where he was a past President. He had an ongoing love of politics as well, serving as Chairman of the New Castle Democratic Committee in the mid-80’s.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Renee Branse Landau. His daughters: Stephanie Landau of Ridgefield, CT, Elizabeth Ammirato of Mahopac, NY and Jennifer Landau of Pleasantville, NY. His brother: William Landau of Hankins, NY. His five grandchildren: Jessica and Trip Cowin, Michael and Sarah Ammirato and Caleb Landau.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced. Contributions in Peter’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
