
Thelma Clementine (Calogero) Johnson, beloved mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Thelma Johnson, passed away on March 24, 2012 at The Kent Specialty Care Center with family by her side. She was 86 years old.
Thelma was born on September 15, 1925 in New York City, the daughter of the late Antonio Calogero and the late Eva Marrone Calogero. She attended local schools in the Bronx, New York. She was employed by Espey Manufacturing of New York City, where she met her future husband, Fred Johnson, of Stenungsund, Sweden. The Johnson family moved permanently to Danbury, CT in the mid-1950’s where, besides raising her family, she became involved with the St. Joesph’s Ladies Guild, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mill Plain Volunteer Fire Department, the Girl Scouts, and the PTO of Mill Ridge School. After the death of her beloved husband, she returned to the workforce, first as a sales associate at D. M. Read’s Department Store, then as a special education driver at the County School Service, and lastly, as a paraprofessional in Special Education at Rogers Park Middle School, from which she retired.
In later years, she enjoyed reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, as well as bingo, cooking classes, painting classes, and other activities at The Kent. She will be greatly missed by her four children: Anthony and his wife Jody Leight, of Orange, NJ; Maria and her husband Armando Chamorro, of Managua, Nicaragua; Susan, of Waterbury, CT; and Deborah, of Danbury, CT; her stepson, Paul ahd his wife Janet, of Morris, CT; two grandchildren: Elizabeth Johnson and Sebastian Chamorro; three step grandchildren: Lisa Knapp, Paul Erlingson, and Eleanor Johnson; her six step great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephew: Arlene Hammer, Carol Calsetta, Barbara Dunlap, Janet Jones, and Fred Calogero.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 4pm at St. Joseph Church, Danbury. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Contributions in Thelma’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Green Funeral Home 57 Main St., Danbury.
