
Thomas W. Gaffney, 87, of Danbury passed away peacefully at the Birmingham Health Center on Sunday July 17, 2011, he was beloved husband of the late Ethel M. Gaffney, who passed away on May 15, 2011. Tom was born on September 24, 1923, to the late Lillian (Warmuth) Gaffney and Thomas F. Gaffney in Long Island City, NY. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was a longtime member of St. Joseph Church.
Tom served in the U.S. Army, during WWII. Upon his returning from the service, he married Ethel (Abels) on September 29, 1945. He was a graduate of Saint John’s University with Bachelor of Business. He was retired from Union Carbide Corporation after 31 years, Allied Transmission Co. and Camp Sloane of the Y.M.C.A. of Connecticut. He was member of Catholic War Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, serving as Commander, SR Vice Commander, Treasurer of Chapter 25 Danbury, CT, and Member of the Veterans Council. He was also member of Knights of Columbus. He has served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister while a member of St. Gregory the Great Church in Bellerose, NY. He was an avid baseball fan of the New York Mets. He also performed volunteer service for the American Red Cross Wheels program along with being driver for Disabled American Veterans for appointments at the West Haven clinic.
His daughters survive him, Margaret (Peggy) Gaffney, Nancy DiCecco and Patricia Valvo, a daughter-in-law Janet Gaffney, brother Robert and sister-in-law Patricia Gaffney, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His sons, Thomas W Gaffney and Timothy Gaffney, predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury, on Friday, July 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. The family will received friends on Thursday, July 21, 2011 between the hours of 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury.
