Thomas Jay Saunders (Tommy), beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed peacefully in his sleep on March 16, 2017. He was born on July 9, 1952 of late Franklin and Dorothy (Dibble) Saunders and was the husband to Donna Saunders for 38 years. Do to Tom's larger than life character and his heart of gold that impacted many, the world will not be the same without him.
Tommy, a.k.a. Papa, spent most of his time being with or talking about his grandchildren. From swimming in his pool to taking them for hikes, his grandchildren meant the world to him and he meant the world to them. If you went to the house you would see him driving his tractor around the yard giving rides to all his grandchildren. He will be remembered for giving them dollars, change and sneaking them candy every chance he could.
Tom retired from the Forestry division for the City of Danbury. Though he was most known for being “The Drummer”, his passion was playing in the Whitewood band, which led him from small fundraiser gigs in bars to playing with Rock Stars. Tom loved driving around town blasting music and drumming on his steering wheel. If Tom wasn't playing his drums, you would find him riding his Harley or cheering his family at their sporting events. Tom was their biggest fan. You knew when he was on the sideline. He encouraged the crowd with his unique sideline etiquette. Tom lived his life to the fullest and those that knew him would say he marched to the beat of his own drums!!!
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Donna (Reilling) Saunders; children Jason, Jennifer and husband LLoyd, Michael, Ryan and Wife Marquitta; grandchildren Samantha, Matthew, Rykeese, Mikey, Rysaiah and Bella; brothers and sisters Barbara, Jean, Frank and Christine. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Dorothy, and his sister Susan.
Calling hours will be held at Green Funeral Home in Danbury on Friday, March 24, 2017, between the hours of 4:00PM and 8:00PM. A prayer service for Thomas will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Green Funeral Home at 10:00AM. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Bethel, CT.
