Vincent Zackeo, 86, died at home in the house that he built and lived in for more than 50 years, on March 18, 2022. Born on October 6, 1935, to the late Dominick and Catherine (Ferrovecchio) Zackeo, Vince is survived by his wife Janice, his children Dominick Zackeo and his wife Betsey of Simsbury, Connecticut, Vincent Zackeo of New Fairfield Connecticut, and Holly (Zackeo) Smith and her Husband David of New Fairfield and his Grandchildren, Allison Thoms, Andrew Smith, Jake Smith, Jenni Zackeo, Madeline Zackeo, and Samantha Smith.
Raised in Brooklyn by Italian immigrants, Vince quickly learned the importance of community and hard work, working with his father delivering ice and oil. He worked a variety of car mechanic jobs in his early years in New York and New Mexico. Upon returning back East to Connecticut he became the Service Manager at Wilton Imported Cars, the Fleet Manager for Mitchell Fuel Oil, and later owned and operated Jackson Equipment Services. Vince retired to spend time with friends and family in 1998. Upon his move to New Fairfield, he became active in the Ball Pond Fire Department, the local Jaycees, and was a member of the New Fairfield Congregational Church.
He met the love of his life, Janice in 1964. They sold all their belongings and drove cross country to New Mexico to start a new life. They soon after moved to New Fairfield, Connecticut to raise their family and have stayed there since.
Vince could fix anything and greeted each challenge as a puzzle to be solved. With his joy for life and creative spirit, he built cars, trucks, and houses. His utilitarian diamond-plate engineering style permeated everything in his life and surroundings. He loved people, big dogs, antique trucks, British sports cars, and his community.
In lieu of donations or flowers, please do something mechanical with a child and celebrate your work with a hot dog (and a cookie) in his honor.
Services are planned at the New Fairfield Congregational Church (20 Gillotti Road, New Fairfield, Connecticut) for Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 4:00. A reception will follow at Biscotti’s (4 Cottontail Road, New Fairfield Connecticut).
