Wayne S. Schoonmaker (Scoon) of Danbury, CT passed away at home on Friday morning, August 15, 2025, at the age of 70. Wayne was born on June 13, 1955, in Danbury, CT. He is the son of the late Stanley H. Schoonmaker and Dolores (Hawes) Schoonmaker. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Lee K. Cigna; niece, Megan Cigna; and his stepmother, Connie (Moore) Schoonmaker.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 49 years (they began dating in 1968 when they were in middle school), Lynn (Hanna) Schoonmaker; his son, Scott W. Schoonmaker; his daughter, Amy E. Schoonmaker and her partner, Clinton Bartow, Sr.; and his grandson, Clinton Bartow, Jr. (CJ). He is also survived by beloved family members Dale (Cigna) Nolan, Gary Zenobia (Mary), Gail Miller (Bob), Donna (Hanna) Grossman (Sandy), George Hanna, IV (Leslie), Tom Hanna (Carol), Alan Moore, Linda Moore, Andy Moore (Cathy), many loving nieces and nephews and a long list of incredible life-long friends.
Wayne graduated from Danbury High School in 1973 and from Mattituck Community College with an A.S. Degree in Criminal Justice. He worked with his dad at The Helicoil Corporation for several years before joining the Danbury Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) for 27 years, retiring in 2012. While employed by the Danbury FCI, he also worked part-time at Spirits n’ Such from 1980 well into early 2000. After retirement he continued to work part-time as a driver for Lostocco Auto Parts.
“Scoon,” as he was lovingly known by his family and friends, was a sports enthusiast, a life-long dedicated Colts’ fan, and a loyal fan of the UConn Huskies. He was well-known at Rogers Park for the many years he spent on the softball fields coaching and enjoying the love of the game with his friends and coworkers.
Wayne’s '96 green and tan Chevy truck was known throughout town. He could always be found working on his lawn in his spare time. You always knew when he entered the room because his booming, energetic voice preceded him and, quite the family joke, you knew it was time to go when he brought the vacuum out!
He was known as the “Fitty-Fitty Man” at the “Rogers’ Family Beef Bash” for many years. A wonderful, annual family event which he adored lending a hand in spreading the food, love and raffle prizes alongside “Mom” Rogers, year after year.
Wayne will be immortalized for generations to come by the memories created in all the lives and hearts this wonderful man touched in his time upon this earth. Forever loved and never forgotten!
I love you Goober, Love Grandpa!
