Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel and Jacinta (Mota) Costa she was a lifelong area resident and a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish.
Lucia graduated from New Bedford High School in 1948. She was a homemaker for her cherished family and for many years, donated her time and talent to her church. In 1994 Lucia was honored by Bishop Sean O’Malley with the Marian Award in recognition of her personal dedication and loyal service to St. Mary’s. In her early years, she was active with the Ladies Guild at St. John the Baptist Church and along with her husband Edward, she was an active member of the St. John’s Couple’s Club.
Lucia was an artist, an expert seamstress and crafter. Throughout her life she enjoyed creating and sharing her art with others and was always interested in learning and experimenting with a new medium. Lucia will be remembered for her humor, her sparkling personality, and her unique ability to remember everyone’s name and make them feel special.
She is survived by her children, Martha A. Machnik and her husband John of Warwick, RI, Peter E. Costa and his wife Letitia of Dartmouth, and Joseph E. Costa and his wife Sandra of Nashville, TN; four grandchildren, Rebecca Machnik and her fiancée Renwick Taylor III of Tacoma, WA, Alison Robidoux and her husband Ryan of Somerset, MA, Fenner Arruda and her husband Jason of Dartmouth, and Silas M. Costa and his wife Darcilia of Acushnet; and four much loved great grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022, at 9:00am from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME AT DARTMOUTH, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, 795 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. BURIAL IS PRIVATE. Her visitation will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022, from 4:00-7:00pm in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth.
