Born in Dartmouth, on October 18, 1932, she was a daughter of the late G. E.(Ted) Hutchinson and Laura (Dauphinee) Hutchinson. Barbara was educated in the Dartmouth school system and the Halifax Academy Commercial School. After the sudden and early death of her father she and her siblings were raised by their strong and loving Mother who remained her inspiration into adulthood. She was employed at Imperial Oil Limited prior to her marriage to Kenneth MacKenzie of Halifax in 1953. She entered the Elementary Pharmacy Course and graduated in June 1954. Two years later, Barbara & Ken opened MacKenzies’ Pharmacy Limited on Portland Street which they operated for twenty-one years. In retirement, they developed a great interest in antiques and travel. Barbara was a dedicated member of Christ Church choir for over fifty years, a life member of the Maid Marion Chapter I.O.D.E. and the Dartmouth Curling Club. She was past president of the Dartmouth YM-YWCA, a member of the Shubenacadie Canal Commission, and a member of Brightwood and Ashburn golf clubs.
Barbara is survived by her son Dan, Chester and daughter Gina, Eastern Passage, grandchildren, Samantha MacKenzie and Kenneth Shave and great granddaughter, Mackenzie Lee; sister-in-law Shirley Hutchinson and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Ken, son Robert, a daughter and son in infancy, sister Marjorie (Jack) Hare, brother Alan Hutchinson, nephew Ted Hutchinson, and sister-in-law Laura (Dr. Claude) Leighton.
