

“Capt. Jack”
Age 91, of Dartmouth and Veterans Memorial Hospital, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2014. Born in Dartmouth, he was the son of Capt. William and Harriet Matthews.
Jack began his seagoing career at the age of 19 during the Second World War, when he joined the crew of the M.V. Petrolite of the Imperial Oil fleet as Ordinary Seaman. During his career he progressed through the ranks and achieved the highest rank of Master Mariner Foreign Going. He enjoyed a 40 year career with Imperial Oil until his retirement in 1981. Jack was the first Canadian to attend the advanced supertanker handling course in Grenoble, France. For his service during the WWII, Jack received the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Pacific Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. As member of the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association, he worked tirelessly to ensure that the sacrifices made by Canadian Merchant Seaman was recognized by the Government of Canada .
Jack served as a member of the Company of Master Mariners, serving as Divisional Master for two years; Director of the Halifax Port Commission and Director of the Museum of the Atlantic.
Capt. Jack was a member of Cornwallis Lodge since 1947 and served as Worshipful Master for two years; was appointed to the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia as V. W.Grand Steward and served as organist for Cornwallis Lodge for 37 years. Jack was a member of Queen Esther Chapter #61, Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron and organist and had a Grand Chapter appointment as Grand Warden, and Grand Representative to Nebraska.
Capt. Jack was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Dorothy Joyce (Myrer); brothers Bill, Ralph, Jim; sisters May (Daine) and his twin Ida (Cooke) and granddaughter Shelley Jeffries.
Capt. Jack is survived by son Jack Matthews (Judy), Dartmouth; daughter Linda (Don Skinner) Dartmouth; daughter Donna Matthews-Kerr, Edmonton and son Ross Matthews (Jane) Dartmouth. Grand children Don Matthews (BettyJean)Ottawa, Andrew Matthews(Danielle) Porters Lake; Matthew Skinner (Charity Bengert) Vancouver; Sandy Skinner (Jessica) Dartmouth; Ted Kerr, New York; Adam Kerr (Lauren) Edmonton; Lindsay Kerr (Mike Sieber), Edmonton; Ian Matthews , Montreal; Kate Matthews (Rick Stone) Stewiacke. Great grandchildren Alex Jeffries; Isaiah, Jackson, Jordan Skinner and Terris, Rhonda Matthews.
Dad was a pianist, an organist, a storyteller and a poet. He enjoyed playing the piano for a sing song and spending time with his great love, his wife Dorothy .
