

Clarke, Charles Edward-89, of Meagher’s Grant and Dartmouth passed away on September 19, 2014, at the Middle Musquodoboit Valley Hospital, with his daughter and granddaughter by his side. Born August 16, 1925 in Dartmouth, he was the eldest son of the late William George Clarke and Agnes Kathleen (Simpson). He married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Evelyn (Horne), the daughter of the late Darrell W. Horne and Alice M. Walker on December 2, 1946.
After graduating High School in Dartmouth, Charles joined the Canadian Army in 1944. After basic training in Yarmouth and advanced training in Aldershot, he served as Infantry Instructor and was discharged in 1946.
Charlie, as he was commonly called by many, began his career with Carl W. Merson Men’s Wear, joined Tip Top Tailors in 1953 in Halifax and in Moncton as store manager. In 1957, Charlie returned to Dartmouth to open the Tip Top Tailors store on Portland Street. In 1962, he joined Trizec Corporation as Promotion Manager and became Property Manager in 1963. He was partner in Captain Todd’s Beverage Room on the Eastern Shore. Charlie finished his career working for the Department of Social Services from 1981 until his retirement in 1990.
An avid sports enthusiast, Charlie played hockey, baseball and ran many road races in Dartmouth. His lifelong love of golf began as a young caddy at Brightwood. He was proud to have won the Red Cross Tournament in 1943, it was at Brightwood where he got a hole-in-one at the age of 36. One of his proudest accomplishments was serving as the youngest president in the history of Brightwood in 1950. He served as the Director and Executive Secretary of the N.S. Golf Association from 1972-1978. Upon relocating to the Eastern Shore, Charlie was a driving force in the River Oaks Golf and Country Club. As a lifetime member, he recently celebrated his 89th birthday at River Oaks surrounded by family and friends.
Charlie’s additional contributions include serving as the President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (1950), President of Dartmouth PC Association (1958-1962), President of the Halifax City and County PC Association (1963-1965) and Commissioner for the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission (1962-1970). In 1967, he ran as the PC candidate for Dartmouth North.
A proud Mason, Charlie served 65 years with the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, A.F & A.M.
Charlie was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy Evelyn (Horne); brother, William (Bill) Clarke; sister, Joan (Swinimer), and his parents William and Agnes Clarke.
Dad is survived by his only daughter, Susan (Richard) Henneberry; grandson, Todd (Trish) Henneberry; granddaughter, Tara Henneberry; great grandchildren, Connor and Peyton Henneberry; brother, Ronald (Pat) Clarke; sister, Kathleen (Ted) Fagan; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday September 25, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8pm in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. There will be a Masonic service held at 7pm on Thursday evening in memory of Charlie . Funeral service will be held on Friday September 26, 2014 at 11am at Christ Church, 50 Wentworth Street, Dartmouth. Family burial will be immediately following the service in Mount Hermon Cemetery.
