Douglas James Harry Smith, 79, of Dartmouth Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026 after a 4 ½ year battle with a rare sarcoma. He was surrounded by the people who loved him; his family.
Doug was born on June 13, 1946, in Saint John, NB. He was the beloved son of Stewart and Dorothy Smith. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend, whose kindness, strength, and sense of humour touched everyone who knew him. Following his graduation at Simonds High School, Doug began his career with F.W. Woolworth & Company (Woolco). His strong work ethic and dedication saw him rise through the ranks to become a General Manager. His career took Doug and his family all across Canada, finally settling in Dartmouth in 1986. After finishing his career with Woolco, he moved on to be an Independent Life Insurance Agent. Doug is survived by Judi, his wife of 57 years; his two sons, Chris (Emily) and Andrew (Charlotte); his four grandchildren, Ethan, Ella, Noah, and Chelsea, who affectionately called him “Bampy”; and his niece, Sarah Woollven. He was predeceased by his mother and father, and his sister, Barbara Woollven (John), of Saint John.
Doug had a large extended family on Judi’s side, consisting of a number of brother & sister-in laws & several cherished nieces and nephews. His special friends included Jim Shillington, George Downing, Frankie Evans, with whom he had maintained contact with since his high school days. Other friends included Stephen Coates, and new found apartment friends Paul Puma, John MacLeod & Rick Mallory (with whom he enjoyed his Tim Horton’s trips).
Throughout his life, Doug was known for his love for his family. No matter what his work schedule was, nothing stopped him from getting to every hockey/soccer game his two boys played in. He enjoyed watching his favourite sports teams (The Toronto Blue Jays, Maple Leafs & New England Patriots)…and was miserable every spring like every other Leaf fan.
When Doug retired, he could be found at the local hockey rink or soccer field watching his grandkids play, as he made every effort to be at all their games. Doug & Judi were fortunate to be able travel quite a bit at this stage, the highlight being many trips to Hawaii. The final family trip was to Toronto in 2024 to watch his beloved Maple Leafs…and they actually won!
Since his diagnosis, Doug had wonderful care teams; Dr. Joanna Zed (Family Practitioner for over 35 years), Dr Dave Wilson, Orthopedic Oncologist Surgeon, the Palliative Care Community Team, especially Mitch (Nurse Practitioner) and Dr. Ceildh Macphail (Oncologist), the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care team on 5 W at the Dartmouth General Hospital (especially Pattie).
Doug will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Halifax Hospice. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
