

Crawley (Downey) Esther- 93 passed away peacefully on January 2, 2013 at the Victoria General Hospital. Born in North Preston on September 22, 1919 to the late Isaac and Unice (Downey) Fraser. Esther was a faithful member of the Saint Thomas United Baptist Church and whenever she entered she lifted the spirit of those around her. In her later years she worked at the market selling baked goods and wreaths. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting and knitting. Esther’s home was like the neighbourhood watch and no one ever left the house hungry, she was like a mother to many in the community. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon, Ceasther (Coulter) of North Preston, Laura (late Melvin Riley), Cherry Brook, Rose and Annette of Dartmouth; sons, Bruce, Frederick, North Preston, Lance (Dorna) and Toney (Rosalind) Dartmouth; sister, Eunice Fraser of North Preston; brothers, Clary (Shirley) of Toronto and Ross of North Preston; daughters-in-law, Jocelyn of Dartmouth and Irene of Toronto; sisters in-law, Ethel Fraser, Winnifred Beals and Linda Fraser; Godchildren, Alisha Downey, Robert Downey and George Lucas, extended family, Robert Diggs, Beulah Fraser, Julie James, Krista Brown, Lloyd Fraser, Vennie Fraser and Lorraine Provo; step-children from her second marriage; 47 grandchildren; 98 great grandchildren, 28 great great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Maurice Downey and her second husband Alfred Crawley; children, Lillian, Maurice III, Sinclair, Brayon, Lorraine, Hester and Esther; sisters, Lillian and June; brothers, David, Martin, Isaac I and Isaac II, Ernest, Allan, Cyril and Louis. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. Visitation will be held on Sunday January 6, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in Saint Thomas United Baptist Church. Funeral Service will be held 1pm Monday January 7, 2013 at Saint Thomas United Baptist Church, Rev. Wallace Smith officiating. Burial will take place in Downey Road Cemetery.
