KEYS, George Walter - On October 3, 2021. George Walter Keys passed away peacefully in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia with his wife, two daughters, and younger brother by his side. Born February 21, 1961, in Sydney, Cape Breton, George was raised by his parents Anna and Walter Keys, alongside his late brother David and his brothers Eric and Bruce Keys. Quirky, creative, curious and kind. George was a husband to one, a dad to two, a brother to three, and a friend to all. He had the unique ability to strike up a conversation with anyone—charming people with his encyclopedic knowledge of music, brilliant banter, and sharp intelligence. When he was 23, George moved to Halifax where he later started his 29 years of work as an electrical technician at Nova Scotia Power. He was known to his coworkers as the go-to guy if they had a question or issue. A natural problem solver, George was always quick to help with unparalleled patience and curiosity, occasionally accompanied by his beloved dog Otto on late-night “disconnects.” George was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 5 years prior to his passing. Over those 5 years, he travelled, hiked, cycled, and bought countless albums at local Halifax record stores—an unwavering smile and quick wit always accompanying him on his adventures. Together with his wife, Donna Keys, they raised two beautiful and intelligent women, Maria and Rachel Keys, who share his love of life, music, and silliness. He will be profoundly missed as a loving husband and father, a supportive brother, a close brother-in-law, and a fun uncle to many nieces and nephews. Though he didn’t talk about it, George made an effort to support many charitable organizations. Even through challenging times in his own life, he looked for ways to make others’ lives easier. That was his nature; he asked for nothing and gave so much. The family would like to thank the staff in Hematology and Medical Day Unit for their continued care over the past five years—special thanks to Research Coordinator Judith James. The family also want to send their immense gratitude to the staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital, where George received incredible care in his final weeks. There will be a gathering to remember George on Sunday October 17th from 2-5pm at Banook Canoe Club. Proof of vaccination and masks will be required. Those who knew George know that he loved to chat—so please come with stories and memories to share. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Myeloma Canada.
