

CONNORS, JOAN MARGARET (CASAVECHIA) – 77 of Dartmouth, It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, partner, grandmother, and sister, after a courageous battle with cancer; she passed away at home surrounded by her loving family. “Our angel has gone home to heaven.” Joan was the eldest daughter of Walter and Margaret Casavechia (Boutilier). Joan was born in Halifax and died in Dartmouth on April 21, 2016. She is survived by her son, Stephen (Deanna), daughter, Kathy (Gordie) Giles, all of Dartmouth, daughter, Margaret (Claude Chenier) Connors of Ottawa, and Michael (Monica) of Berwick; and her partner, Audley Lowe of Dartmouth; her grandchildren, Corey (Amanda), Aaron (Kiley), Cassandra (Will), Gordie (Mallory), Shawn, Maddie, Matthew, Mackie, Ashley (Ryan) and Justin (Amanda); great-grandchildren Keira, Lorelai, Aiden, Elijah, and Jack and a new baby soon to be born; sisters, Dianne (Wayne) Shrum, Beverley (Raymond Lapierre) Casavechia, and Mary Lou (Joey) Carmichael and her brother-in-law, Tom MacFarlane; her Uncle Leo (Donas) Casavechia and Uncle John (Margaret) Casavechia; many nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Margaret Casavechia, husband, Frank Connors, sister, Marie MacFarlane. Joan loved spending time with her family and friends at home and her summer place in the Gulf Shore and Fox Harbour. Everyone who met Joan loved her and she was an inspiration to everyone around her. At age 16 or 17, Joan went to Halifax Vocational School to become a hairdresser – she opened her own hairdressing shop in her parent’s home until her marriage to Frank and their family began and she continued doing hair out of her home for many years. Then her sister, Beverley, and Joan opened their own hairdressing shop, Port Wallace Beauty Salon which they ran for 16 years. About 6 years ago, Joan became the travelling hairdresser – she went to her customer’s homes until November 2015 when she became sick. Joan had been doing hair for over 60 years. Joan loved angels, Soap Operas, watching TV, talking on the telephone knitting, crocheting, and rug hooking. The family would like to thank Dr. Varma, the VON, especially, Michelle and Mitch of the Palliative Care Team for their compassion to Joan. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 23, 2016, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Mattatall`s Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. The funeral will be held at 9:00 am Monday, April 25, 2016 in St. Thomas More Church, 15 Caledonia Road, Dartmouth with Father Toochukwu Okafor officiating with a reception to follow.
