

Son of the late Jean (Duff) and Rev. Dr. John A. MacGlashen, passed away peacefully at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital on June 27, 2014. He was predeceased by his wife Edith (Whynot); son, Archie; sisters, Margery, of Dartmouth, Agnes Gordon, Montreal, Mary Montgomerie (Bridgetown); brothers, Donald, Bill “Mickey,” of Sudbury, Hugh of Dartmouth. John is survived by his son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Anne (Sorette), of Dartmouth; daughter, Jayne of Dartmouth; grandsons, Roger (Roxanne Miller), Joshua (Colleen MacRae); great granddaughter, Payton.
John joined the navy in 1939 as an OD and rose to the rank of Lieutenant (N). MacGlashen managed Ashburn Golf Club and went on to be the Development Coordinator for the sport of canoeing as well as served as an elder at St. James United Church and was a life member of Club 24 on Dundas Street. Major accomplishments in his hall of fame career included being the president of the Maritime Football Union which united college and armed forces in one league. Following football, John became Paddling Chairman of Banook Canoe Club and later served on the board of Senobe Aquatic Club and then Flag Officer of the Atlantic division of the Canadian Canoe Association. John and an elite group of men and women formed the Society of Canoe Championships which aimed at bringing the world of paddling championships to the best natural race course in the world, Lake Banook. They were also successful in bringing both the junior and senior World’s to Dartmouth.

Cremation has taken place under the care of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS, where visitation will take place on Friday July 4 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held at St. James United Church, Dartmouth on Saturday July 5 at 2pm. Reception to follow in the church hall.
