It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a great and gentle man, Leo, surrounded by family, who fought a valiant battle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Dad was born July 22, 1946, in Halifax, and raised in Head of Chezzetcook.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Evelyn (Keddy) and Bernard MacRoberts and siblings Glenn, Eric and Mary. He adored his nieces and nephews and loved his siblings very much, Catherine, George, Evelyn, Debra, Susan, Jimmy and Sharon! He was an admirable and loyal family man and his wife, Susan, was the love of his life. Dad cherished his 3 daughters, Ellie (Robert), Pam (Christoph), Janet and being a Papa to his fun and fabulous grandchildren, Sarah, Randy, Jeshua, Josiah, Daniel and Alora who were the apples of his eye.
Dad was a man of many talents and tried many job opportunities, settling by starting his own small handyman business. Dad was so full of adventure and could never sit still! One of his most cherished hobbies was his time fishing. He was a good cook and enjoyed gardening, reading, walking almost anywhere, especially on beaches and treks through the woods learning about wildlife and forestry. He knew what he could eat and would snack on whatever was edible along the way. He knew where the best blueberry picking spots were along the # 7 Highway and would always have a freezer full of wild picked blueberries.
Dad loved adventure and would travel to unknown trails just to see where they would lead! He loved yard sales and spending time with his in-laws. He also enjoyed going for coffee and road trips specifically with the late Frank Binns, Peter Giffin and Gordie Burgess among a few others who were all committed and involved with the Knights of Columbus. He valued his volunteer work and dedicated many years to the Knights. Dad had the biggest and kindest heart and would do anything for anyone, no questions asked! He always dealt with life in such a positive way; 'Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself'! Do not stress over things you cannot control he'd say.
Heartfelt gratitude goes out to Dr. Mary Margaret Keating, division of Hematology at the QEll and her nurses Heather Veitch and Aleiaj Papa for their endless support and kindness and for Dr. Keating's devotion to helping Dad battle his cancer in the most dignified way. Your dedication, sincerity and thought-out plans kept our Dad with us for over 6 years and Mom and us thank you for all your care!
Visitation only will be held with A.L Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth on Sunday January 11th from 2-4 pm, all are welcome!
Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Dad's name.
