

Margaret Lillian Dakin, formerly of Dartmouth died at age 108 on 24 April 2020 at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Margaret was born on 17 June 1911 in the village of Little River, Digby County, the daughter of Mendell C. Frost and June W. (Tibert) Frost. She was one of 9 children and is the last surviving member of her birth family.
She was educated in the public school at Little River.
On December 30, 1933 she married Maynard A. Dakin of Centerville, Digby County, N.S., subsequently living in Centerville, Lunenburg, Moncton, Eastern Passage and Dartmouth.
Margaret was a self-employed salesperson for various products, and was office manager for Humphrey Agencies Limited of Halifax from 1952 to 1958. She then moved to C.F. Whynacht Real Estate as a licensed agent and in 1962 transferred to the Dartmouth office of the Royal Trust Company Real Estate Division. She retired in 1970 at the age of 59.
She has been a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Dartmouth since 1947. In 1957 she joined the Order of the Eastern Star as a charter member of Ruth Chapter, later becoming a life member. Her involvement with the National Campers and Hikers Association (now known as The Family Campers and RV’ers Association) began in 1968 and in 1973 she was crowned first International Queen of the retiree branch of that organization, at Harlingen, Texas. In 1972 she and Maynard were both commissioned as a "Kentucky Colonel" by then Governor Wendell Ford of the state of Kentucky, USA. In 1974 she and her husband organized the “Autumn Leaves Retirees Chapter” (NCHA) in Nova Scotia.
In the early 1970s, they became the first managers of the City of Dartmouth Municipal Campground (Shubie Park), a position they held for several years.
Throughout the 1990s they continued to make their home in Dartmouth while wintering in Riverview, Florida, living in their travel trailer amongst their retired friends from Canada and the USA. In 2003 they moved to Acadia Place Senior’s Apartments in Dartmouth.
She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Maynard A. Dakin, in 2005 at age 95. She was also predeceased by brothers Carl, Emdon, Earl, Gerald, Hoyt, and sisters Ethel, Utah and Audrey, and by several nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her son, Ellery (Al) and wife Daneen of Stillwater Lake, grandson Bruce Dakin of Dartmouth, granddaughter Nancy Nickerson (Glenn) of Porter’s Lake, and great-granddaughter Rebecca Nickerson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Bear River, Lunenburg, Coldbrook, Halifax and Dartmouth, and others in New Brunswick and Florida.
Sincere appreciation is extended to the staff of Princess Lane, Parkstone Enhanced Care, for their unfailing kindness to and care of Margaret and her family.
Cremation has taken place under the care of A.L Mattatall Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Due to current Nova Scotia health regulations there will be no funeral service. A graveside committal service will be attended by her immediate family at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens with Reverend Martin Zwicker officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 6136 Almon St, Halifax, NS B3K 1T8.
