Mildred "Mid" Irene (Hunter) Wentzell

WENTZELL, Mildred (Mid) Irene (Hunter) – 97. The family of Mildred Wentzell is saddened to announce her passing on December 9, 2019; in Dartmouth. Mildred was a daughter of Charles and Martha (Cochrane) Hunter. Born in Sweets Corner, Nova Scotia; she was the youngest and last surviving member of their eight children. The war years brought Mildred to Dartmouth where she met Arthur (Art) Wentzell. They married in 1947. Mid was a very active volunteer in the community. She helped organize a neighbourhood Red Cross group which met monthly for over 40 years folding bandages and later crafting sale items. She also volunteered for several years at the Halifax County Hospital. Mid liked to get involved in politics and worked for her party. In addition, she helped with youth programs: girls’ softball, bowling and junior high teen dances. She liked nothing better than a hot cup of tea along with a good book, a crossword puzzle, a game of solitaire or scrabble until the ravages of dementia ended these activities. Mildred is survived by her daughters, Nancy Bowie and Cathy Wentzell as well as granddaughter Heather (Uchenna) Ezurike and great grandchildren; Amarachi, Onyeka, Tobenna and Kanayo Ezurike; and grandson Michael Bowie. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by brothers Russell, John, Howard, Eugene; sisters Hilda, Eleanor, Mabel; son-in-law Chris Bowie. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A celebration of life service will be held at A L Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth on Saturday, December 14th at 11:30 am with a reception to follow. A private family burial will be held at a later date. A donation in Mildred’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. A very special thanks to Laurel Collins and her staff at Laurel’s Lake Residence Inc. for the exemplary care provided to Mildred during the final year of her life. Thanks also to the staff at Jamieson Hall, Parkland at the Lakes for their care in the preceding years.
