

Murray was a member of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers; he was a life member of the Naval Architecture of Marine Engineers USA, and a fellow of the Naval Engineers of London, England. He was a certified Dock Master for all types of docks and marine railways, as well as a life member of the Institute of Pulp and Paper Industry for North America. Murray served as a machinist in Dartmouth and then went on to attend night school at N.S. Tech. He then went to sea, first sailing on the “Kildonan.” After this he joined Imperial Oil where he was the Chief Engineer on the world’s first super tanker. Following this Murray went on to work for Bowater Shipping as Chief Engineer and in 1958 he was promoted to Superintendent for Canada. In 1959 he transferred to their New York Division, 1962 saw him promoted to Sales Service Representative for Bowater. Between 1965-69 he worked for Irving Kent Lines in New Brunswick. In 1970 Murray purchased Breton Industrial and Marine, where over a 16 year period he built a variety of vessels up to 5000 horse power. He was one of the founding members of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers. In 1986 he retired. In his spare time Murray could be found entertaining in the Halifax/Dartmouth area with the band he formed, “Highland Heritage.” For over 20 years he was a warden of Christ Church in Cow Bay.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Iris (Martin); sons, John (Donna McGarrety), and Paul (Valerie Palmer); grandchildren, Erin Osborne (Michael Brookes) and Andrew Osborne; great grandson, Samuel Brookes; sisters, Margaret McKillop, Helen Osborne, Rita Colbert, Marion Bembridge; and brother, Frank Osborne. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Pepler.
A Masonic service will be held at 7pm on Wednesday June 26 in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. Funeral service will be 2pm Thursday June 27 from St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Eastern Passage. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that memorial donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Kidney Foundation.
